Copyright is ever present in our work lives. The decision to use a copyrighted work is ultimately the teacher's decision and the district makes it clear it will not be held responsible. Subsequently, many questions come up in our school about whether something a teacher wants to use is considered fair use of a copyrighted material. This curriculum web should help you understand what is allowed and not allowed under fair use and help you to feel more comfortable with decisions related to copyrighted material. This curriculum web is designed for teachers at Grove Ave School.
Instructions:
Check out the Guide to familiarize yourself with the components of this curriculum web.
Read and familiarize yourself with the copyright and fair use guidelines. Understanding these guidelines will give you a frame of reference to always use. You may print the guidelines too.
In reality, each instance has unique circumstances that require that these guidelines are examined each time. A simple change in factors may or may not allow a resource to be used.
Visit all the scenarios and read and answer the questions.
Go to the website resources provided and examine them to understand why the scenario does or does not fall under fair use. Then look at the arguments. Did you take these into consideration?
Take the quiz at the end to test yourself. There will be questions based on the scenarios as well. Use your answers to help you understand the rights of copyright holders and your rights covered by fair use.
