Artifact Name: Network Design Project

Artifact Description:
This was a two-part assignment. For the first section, I designed a network project for my district, which was to install wireless access points throughout the junior high building. The second part of this project was a field experience. With the help of my network manager, I decided to install a SonicWall firewall on the network server.

Artifact Reflection:
I really enjoyed this benchmark project. Although I found the assignment difficult, the project afforded me the time to learn about my district network. I was also given the opportunity to work with the network manager of my district and have some hands-on experience with the server. I now feel that I have established more of a relationship with the technology team in my district. Since this project, I have been communicating with them on a much more regular basis and exchanging ideas to incorporate more technology in my classroom and have been a sounding board for them in helping decide what teachers might need in the future which is helping them to make network decisions for the future. Overall, I considered this project to be a positive growth experience.

Rationale:
ISTE-TF.1 - These projects show an understanding of networking and and how to write a proposal to purchase or improve your network . It includes an example of a school proposal, an actual experience installing a firewall on the network and professional development activities to encourage teacher use of technology.
ISTE-TF.2.A - This project allows teachers to have access to a faster, yet protected network. Teachers will have an easier time including technology because of their ability to access it anywhere in the building. There will also be able to accommodate a variety of techniques into their instruction for different learning styles using websites such as United Streaming.
ISTE-TF.6 - This project helps teachers learn about rules and laws that govern schools regarding Internet access, licensing procedures, and fair use acts for students.
ISTE-TF.7 - This project helps teachers learn about rules and laws that govern schools regarding Internet access, licensing procedures, and fair use acts for students.
ISTE-TF.8 - This project encourages districts to plan appropriately for the future of the district. It also encourages the implementation of professional development with each activity to instruct teachers in the use of the technology and encourage the implementation of new school "products."

Course Reflection:
1. What new learning occurred for you in this course?
- I learned about my district's network. Before this project, I didn't even know where the school server was located. I also learned how to install a firewall
2. Indirectly, what did your students and/or other teachers learn from this course?
- Indirectly, my students simply have a teacher who is more knowledgeable about networks. I'm less afraid to try things when something goes wrong with a computer which means less down time for them if something goes wrong with a computer.
3. What did you learn that will help you address diverse student needs and promote equitable access to current technologies?
- I'm don't feel any of my networking experience addresses student diversity.
4. How would you design professional development for other teachers who are interested in expanding their knowledge and skills related to the goals of this course?
- I would take the teachers to see the server and explain the purpose of a server. I would also talk to teachers about the legal issues and licensing involved with installing software on the server.
5. How has this course enabled you to take a leadership role in your school or district?
- This course helped me establish a relationship with the technology team in my district. Since this project, I have been communicating with them on a much more regular basis and exchanging ideas to incorporate more technology in my classroom and have been a sounding board for them in helping decide what teachers might need in the future which is helping them to make network decisions for the future.
